News Article Assignment
Description:
Students will summarize and analyze a current events news article related to American
domestic politics. The article must be from a news source, and cannot be an opinion piece.
To get full credit, students must:
1. Find a news article (not an opinion piece) from a mainstream, trustworthy news
source that is dated at most 2 weeks before your presentation date.
2. Do an at least 5-minute Zoom presentation where you describe the major details
of the article, and present an analysis of how you think the story impacts politics.
You must conclude your presentation with a question that is designed to start a
class debate about the issue. (IE: encouraging other students to provide thoughts
on the issue you present.)
3. Write a typed, single page, double spaced analysis of the article. This will include
a brief summary of the major elements of the news story, as well as your thoughts
regarding the political impact of the story. This short essay must be in your own
words, and not have any quotes or citations from the article.
4. Attach a copy of or a link to the news article at the bottom of your essay.
Rubric:
1. 4% on the in-class presentation.
a. Full credit requires an article summary, an analysis of potential political impact,
and encouraging in-class discussion.
2. 4% is for the written assignment.
a. Clearly written page summarizing the article, and an analysis of potential political
impact.
3. 2% is for choosing an article that is a news article from 1-2 weeks prior to your
presentation date.
