Argument Paper 2 (Logic)
Write a paper with a short introduction and conclusion, that addresses the three parts below. The
rubric and more info on the format are also presented below.
Part 1: Paraphrase the Two Articles. The first 1 and ½ to 2 pages of your paper, or more,
should paraphrase one or two central arguments from the articles by Ibram Kendi and Kelafa
Sanneh. Although you do not have to paraphrase the entire articles, you should still provide a
brief summary of each article’s main points, in addition to paraphrasing one or two supporting
arguments.
Part 2: Defend/Explain Your Point of View. Explain your view of the central disagreement
between the two authors regarding Kendi’s word “anti-racist”, or any related disagreements, like
the black experience in America. This part should take up 1 to 1 and ½ pages, or more, of your
paper. Do you agree more with Kendi or Sanneh, and why? You can also agree with neither, or
both. What matters is not your opinion—you can believe whatever you want—but that your
view, whatever it is, draws from a legitimate understanding of the authors.
Part 3: Reflect on Biases and Fallacies: Yes, we are all biased. But recognizing biases in our
own and others’ reasoning can help us learn and grow intellectually. Make sure you reflect on
any biases and fallacies in your own viewpoint as well as in those of the required articles,
targeting specific examples (confirmation bias, anecdotal evidence, ad hominem, etc.). It is up to
you whether you incorporate this reflection into part 2 or include a separate section at the end
before your concluding paragraph to address it.
Citations: You do not have to cite any sources if you don’t want to. If you quote one of the
articles, just put the author’s name in parentheses or refer to them in the text. For example, Kendi
claims that “What one black American experiences, many black Americans experience”. But if
you cite any additional sources, they should be cited according to MLA, APA, or CMS (your
choice).
What should the final product look like?: You should turn in a 4-6 page, 12-point font, doublespaced paper that addresses parts 1, 2, and 3 above.
How will you grade my paper?: I will grade you on the following criteria.
• Organization (25%): The paper is clear, consistent, and easy to follow. Each sentence
logically contributes to the next and paragraphs are divided appropriately by content.
• Analysis (25%): The paper illustrates a legitimate understanding of the relevant ideas
and arguments, as well as any outside sources used. That understanding is incorporated
clearly into the student’s point of view (regardless of the student’s opinion).
• Paraphrasing (25%): The paper fully paraphrases the relevant ideas and arguments, as
well as any outside sources used.
• Format (25%): The paper is free of spelling and grammatical errors. Sources are cited
clearly and properly, when necessary. The paper follows instructions accurately.
