Assignment A2—Exploring Canada
This assignment asks you to follow the plan of organization below and write an essay that is based
on EITHER a Canada Guide chapter OR a Canadian Encyclopedia collection, NOT BOTH.
Instructions
The Canada Guide has sections on Basics, History, Places, Symbols, etc. Choose one section to
explore. Inside your section, you will find links to chapters. Explore some chaptersin your section,
and then choose exactly one chapter to write about.
OR: The Canadian Encyclopedia has sections on People, Places, and Things. Choose one section
to explore. Inside your section, you will find links to collections. Explore some collections in your
section, and then choose exactly one collection to write about. Your chosen collection must
include at least three articles.
Write and essay that follows the plan of organization below.
Plan of Organization
Title: Use the Canada Guide chapter title, OR the Canadian Encyclopedia collection title.
Introduction: In one short paragraph, introduce very briefly the content of the Canada Guide
chapter OR the Canadian Encyclopedia collection. The purpose of an introduction is to introduce
your essay to the reader, not to summarize the entire content of your essay.
Body Paragraphs: In three or more paragraphs, write about three or more things that you learned
from the chapter (or collection) that you think surprising, or important, or just plain interesting.
Write one paragraph for each thing you learned. Rewrite everything into your own words as
much as possible, to show how well you understand what you are reading, and how well you can
write. If you need to quote to be precise, then use quotation marks.
Conclusion: In one or more paragraphs, summarize your thoughts on
• the general importance of the contents of the chapter (or collection), and/or
• something in the chapter (or collection) you would like to learn more about, and/or
• something you think important that is missing from the chapter (or collection).
Expectations
The response is a multi-paragraph essay of 300-600 words that follows the plan of organization.
The content is well-developed to address the assignment task. The writing shows consistent
control of sentence structure and language conventions—grammar, usage, syntax, punctuation,
spelling, capitalization—so that the intended meaning is always clear, despite some errors.
