Element Paper (50 points)
Everything in the world around us is made up of the same set of building blocks: the 110+ elements featured on the periodic table. But do you know which elements are being used in your everyday tasks? In this assignment, you will choose one element to research and explore in more depth. You are to prepare a short typed paper that addresses the following topics (which cover the learning outcomes of the course):
• Describe physical properties, electronic structure, reactivity, and other atomic properties learned in class (Explain basic concepts and principles)
• How was the element discovered? How is it isolated or purified? (Methods of scientific inquiry)
• Describe the major uses of this element (commercially or otherwise) and how you may encounter this element in daily life (if applicable).
• If this element became unavailable due to supply issues, how would our American way of life be affected? (Personal and Social Responsibility)
Additional topics you may wish to explore:
• What “class” of elements does it belong to? What is unique about this group?
• Where is the element found?
• Does this element pose a threat to human health? How?
• What does this element cost?

The paper should be 3-5 pages in length, double-spaced with 12 point font written in Microsoft Word. In addition to the page count, include a list of references. Figures and images should be used where appropriate to add to the topic, but do not shorten the page limit.
While this is not an English course, the rules of the English language still apply. Your paper should be easy to follow and organized with an introduction to the topic and a conclusion that summarizes the major points of the paper. Spelling and grammatical errors will affect the final grade.
Papers will be checked for plagiarism, so be sure to make the paper your own, with your own voice and your own ideas. Any material used from another source must be cited in your paper in whatever format you prefer, and also listed in the References section. Multiple reliable sources should be used (Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source).
