T​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍​he assignment includes three parts: rules/norms, consequences, and procedures; documentation; and communication. As a leader in your classroom, you must document important information and practice clear communication with students and parents/guardians. This begins with providing structure in your classroom including rules/norms, consequences, and routines. Students crave structure (Marzano et al., 2003) and want you to be consistent, so you must be prepared to follow through on any consequences you have established. In the first part of this assignment, you will identify how you will establish the rules/norms, consequences, and procedures for your future classroom and what documentation you will maintain. Will you establish the rules and consequences independently of students? Or construct these with students (Milner et al., 2019)? What kind of procedures and routines will you establish in your classroom? Include three artifacts in this section: one for your rules/rule creation and two for procedures. The procedures could simply be descriptions or could be artifacts such as posters you would hang in your room to communicate procedures to students. Procedures might address how students enter the classroom, submit assignments, ask to leave the room, etc. Each artifact should be annotated or followed by a paragraph of explanation regarding how you will use it. As a teacher, you will also need to document rule violations or other concerning student behavior. What sorts of violations are worth documenting? For example, I hated policing students for chewing gum which was a school-wide policy in the first middle school I taught in. However, it was important to me to document any instances in which a student intended to harm me or another student (which was rare). It may also be important to you to document if a student was particularly sad or withdrawn on any given day so you can follow up with their parents/guardians or the school counselor later. You might also want to document any instances of students going above and beyond for one another or excellent academic performance. Include at least one artifact in this portion of the paper to denote what you will document and how you will document it. Will you only communicate with families when you are concerned about students? Will you send home some variation of praise notes (see “communication resources” on Canvas)? How often will you communicate about grades? And how will you document all of this communication? Use the “communication resources” on Canvas as well as your own sources and searches for this assignment. You are welcome to incorporate learning management systems (LMSs) like Google Classroom (Google LLC, n. d.), Bloomz (2022), etc. in this paper if that is what your local division/district uses or you think would work well for your leadership style. Include one artifact in this section and annotate this artifact or include a paragraph of explanation regarding how you will use it. Because you are writing about your own future practices, first person is most appropriate for this paper. Please use “I” throughout and avoid the use of “you” or “teachers” (i.e., this should not be written like a “how-to” manual for communicating with parents and guardians).
