Your fellow students are geographically scattered. Therefore, it is unlikely that they have a close knowledge of your hometown and environmental issues of local concern. The first major part of your assignment is to create a case study of an environmental issue from your local area. It can concern energy sources, development, pollution of a local waterway, air quality issues, or any of the topics addressed in this course (be creative!). You should describe the situation in detail, so that individuals who are unfamiliar with it can have indepth knowledge of the issue. An important component of the case study should be a presentation of the opposing viewpoints on the issue with justifications for each. This is an important part of the assignment, so you should choose an environmental issue with identifiable, opposing viewpoints that are likely to be viewed differently by different class members. Before undertaking the actual case study, you will post a proposal in the dropbox. Your proposal must include a minimum of one paragraph on: (1) the environmental issue you choose to investigate, including the LOCAL (i.e. close to where you live) geographic area in question, (2) an explanation of the controversy (i.e. the pros and cons or the opposing views), and (3) at least three suitable references you will use to construct your case study.
