Paragraph 1) An Honest Response to the writing: Write a few sentences about how the research article made you feel (ex. “angry because… “or “joyful
because…” or “confused because…” There is no right or wrong answer here. This paragraph should be honest and capture your initial response to the piece of
writing.
P 2) A summary of what you read: Write a paragraph that summarizes what the article was talking about and discussing. What is the article’s topic? What do
they say about the topic? How is the article organized? Do they provide expert testimony, statistics, data, a definition of the topic?
P 3) An analysis/close reading: This part of the writing begins our critical thinking. What claims are being made throughout the article? What examples and
support do they provide for those statements? Write a paragraph that picks out a few specific examples of points that are being made in the article and
examples that are provided. Write a paragraph that covers this section.
P 4) An Interpretation: This part of the writing allows you to pull the “clues” together and offer a statement on what you think the research article is trying to
accomplish. Is it mostly informative? Persuasive? Both? You will combine your summary and analysis to provide an argument about the text. For example,
my summary might be “Bottled water is being used more frequently in U.S. homes. People seem to fear using tap water. Data is provided to show that using
bottled water costs much more than using tap water.” My analysis might include: Bottled water is not really better than tap water. Researchers claim that tap
water is 100% safe to drink after being properly sterilized.” My interpretation might be, “This article is trying to persuade people to ditch the bottled water and
drink more tap water.” Write a paragraph that covers this section.
P 5) Drawing Conclusions: This paragraph is looking for you to blend your own voice with the research. You will make a general statement about the article:
The article, “Drink Tap Water: It’s Free,” tries to persuade the audience to consume tap water instead of bottled water. This article discusses the costs
associated with purchasing bottled water. Experts argue, “insert research from the article” (cite in APA format). Overall, you will want to make a statement
concerning the effectiveness of the article to either persuade and/or inform the audience. You must integrate a few pieces of research in this section in APA
format
