Paper- 100 points (20% of grade), should be emailed to instructor as Word.doc
Each student will write a paper on a topic pre-approved by the instructor, exploring a
genre of music not covered in the course. There are many types of music we are unable
to explore in this class due to time constraints. This is an opportunity for you to research
and learn about a type of music you are interested in.
5-7 pages, 12 point-size Times New Roman, Helvetica or Geneva font, 1” margins,
double-spaced. Your name should appear at the top of the first page, followed by the
paper title. All pages should be stapled together at the top left hand corner.
Title the Word.doc file with “Last Name First initial. MUSC 331 Research Paper.docx” ,
for example if your name is Joe Smith, your file would be titled Smith J. MUSC 331
Research Paper.docx
Use a minimum of 3-5 sources. All sources need to be cited in a proper bibliography.
Footnotes should be used if appropriate.
Minimum of 3 audio/video examples (or more), with embedded links in the digital copy
of your paper. Make a space before and after the link, so there will be no problem
accessing them (no periods immediately following). Links should be easy to highlight
and copy for viewing ease. Do not rename links, rather, use original link only. Links can
be youTube links, personal audio that you have uploaded (private youTube account, for
example), or other. Audio/video should be high quality with specific time markers
explaining what to listen for. Audio examples should help illuminate specific points of
your paper and be referenced in the paper. Make links user friendly (test them out),
and DO NOT make me have to guess what to listen for! Points will be deducted if I
cannot access the audio links.
2 Concert Reports- 25 points each (each 5% of grade)
Concert Reports should be emailed to instructor as a Word.doc
Each student is required to watch 2 live concerts, pre-approved by the instructor, and
write a concert report for each concert attended. In this time of Covid 19, these events
can be pre-recorded online concerts. Each concert needs to be minimum of 40 minutes
long.
Title each Word.doc file with “Last Name First Initial.CR1.docx”, for example if your
name is Joe Smith, your first Concert Report file would be titled Smith J.CR1.docx
Each concert report should contain:
• Names of the performers and name and location of the venue
• The type of music performed
• Historical and cultural context of the type of music performed
• Description of instruments and voices used in the performance
• Discussion of concert, including names of pieces, styles, composers, pertinent
characteristics
• Your personal assessment of the performance
