What would be the proper conclusion about society in the United States in the postwar era
(1940’s-1950’s)?
1. Your paper should:
§ Be typed, 12 font, double-spaced
§ Be at least 750 and not much more than 1000 words (roughly 2 -3 pages)
§ Include internal citations of quotes of the three sources:
– “10 Amazing Years, 1947-1957: A Decade of Miracles,” U.S. News and
World Report, XLIII, December 27, 1957
– Harrington, M. (1962). The Other America: Poverty in the United
States. Macmillan.
– Locke, J. L., & Wright, B. (2019). In The American YAWP: A Massively
Collaborative Open U.S. History Textbook. essay, Stanford University
Press.
2. Your essay should include the following:
§ Introduction
– Set up the essay with a preview of what follows and the purpose of
the essay.
§ Body Paragraph(s)
– Using the YAWP text (Chapter 26, The Affluent Society”), summarize
the postwar period of the late 1940’s through the 1950’s.
§ Body Paragraph(s)
– Describe the argument made within one of the two sources from the
period. Be sure to provide details from the article/excerpt to support
your statements. Clearly state the main idea of the paragraph.
§ Body Paragraph(s)
– Describe the argument made in the second period source, following
the same guidelines as above.
§ Conclusion
– Provide your analysis of the three sources as you answer the central
question: What would be the proper conclusion about society in the
United States in the postwar era (1940’s-1950’s)?
