The Singapore education system plays a key role in the overall nation-building mission, which also sees the involvement of other major institutions or policies such as National Service and multi-racial public housing.
Speaking in 1997 at the launch of the Ministry of Education (MOE)’s National Education programme, then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stressed the importance of equipping Singapore students with a clear sense of nationhood. He said, “(We) must foster in your young a sense of identity, pride and self-respect as Singaporeans. This will strengthen their emotional attachment to the nation, and their sense of rootedness.”

Present three different aspects of Singapore’s education system that serve to instill an appreciation of national identity and patriotism among local students, contributing to nation-building. Thereafter, develop a new programme for MOE’s consideration that can add to existing efforts at promoting nation-building and civic education.
