E-3: The Modern Age (20 points)

Write a three page (750 word) formal essay for your instructor and your peers on one of the topics listed below. You can assume your reader knows the text, but has not examined it as closely as you have. You may use critical sources to assist you, but you may also write developing ideas arrived at through your own analysis. If you use sources, cite them using internal documentation MLA style.(CCO 8, 9, 10)

Your essay should maintain a formal, academic tone and have an introduction, at least four body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It should develop an argument, use quotations from the text, and use effective sentence structure. If you choose to use outside sources, make sure you refer to the critic using MLA in-text citation and Work/s Cited at end of essay. Specifically, your essay should have:
an introduction that:
• introduces topic
• names work(s) and writer(s) to be analyzed
• states an interesting and interpretive thesis as last sentence of introduction
a body that:
• has at least four paragraph developing the thesis
• has a clear, interpretive topic sentences in each graph
• explores a text
• has logical structure
• uses transitions
• quotes from a text and refers to critic(s) if you use other sources
• references reader to Work cited page if secondary sources are used
• employs effective sentence structure and formal academic tone/grammar
a conclusion that:
• sums up
• shows insight gained

3. Describe the values, aspirations, habits of Irish Catholic life as depicted by James Joyce in “The Dead” and/or “Araby.” (CCO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, III)
4. Characterize Prufrock or Eliot’s depiction of the modern wasteland in order to show some of the typical feelings of anxiety, insignificance, and dreariness of modern life. (CCO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, III)
5. Explain the technique of revealing character that simultaneously depicts the character while revealing his own process of self-discovery drawing on Marlow, Prufrock, and the Magi.( CCO 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, III )
6. Choose one of Yeats’ poems to describe briefly. Relate, if appropriate, to any other poets we have read, and tell what the poem says, if appropriate, about the Irish spirit.
