Question 1 (Regular)

So, what’s this research project about? You’ll be researching the impact of an event of your choice on Canada’s economic history. Your final report will have the form of a narrative, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Very roughly: Beginning: “Once upon a time…” Middle: “And then…” End: “The world changed in this way…” In this first step, you are just choosing a topic and getting started with putting your sources together.

Choose a topic. This can be one of the prepared topics, or one that you choose yourself. If you are choosing one yourself and would like feedback on whether it’s feasible, e-mail me at willmore@uvic.ca and I’ll be happy to give advice and feedback. The topic should be one that you are interested in or excited about. You’re going to be thinking about this topic for a long time, so it’s best if it’s something that you find meaningful.

What population will you be looking at? In what time period? (For example, looking at the cod fishery in Newfoundland from 1800 to 1900 is very different than looking at the cod fishery in Quebec from 1920 to 1940.) The topic ‘kits’ include suggestions for population and time period.

Question 2 (Regular)

Let’s start researching your topic. Write down citations in APA style for three (or more) books or articles that are relevant to your topic, and briefly explain why they are relevant. At least one of these needs to be peer-reviewed or professionally published. It will make the challenge question a LOT easier if at least one of these is a peer-reviewed journal article (you don’t want to have to write a 3-2-1 report on a full-length book…).
