The freight transport industry is inextricably linked with trade and the flow of goods, locally as well as internationally. It has been beset with many issues such as congestion, air pollution and safety (e.g. the high rates of death and injury experienced on road networks). In addition, from 29th March, 2019 it will have to respond to the changes brought about by the implementation of Brexit.
You have a role as an advisor to industry and government. Giving careful consideration to the questions that this raises, produce a 5,000 word report that will identify the main issues and evaluate their implications for the industry and the countries concerned. Please state any assumptions that you make before discussing their relevant implications.
Please note:
a) Although the main focus for this will be the UK and Europe, you should also take account of the effect on other countries where appropriate.
b) Answers should state the assumptions on the nature of the Brexit outcomes made by the writer in formulating their implications e.g. Britain to remain in the single market.
Summative Assessment
Recommended format & length:
An individual report (approximately 5000 words) suitably structured with references to the appropriate (preferable peer-reviewed) logistics management literature (textbook, journals, and websites) and bibliography using the APA system. The report to be submitted in electronic format (PDF or Word) via Unilearn to Turnitin
NB Care should be taken when consulting websites; they are not all equally authoritative (for example Wikipedia is not peer-reviewed; therefore is not considered an academic reference website).

Outstanding work with clear evidence that the student is able to fully explain and where appropriate, discuss issues relating to the task. Clear evidence of reading outside standard sources. Effective use of APA-6 referencing system throughout.
Commendable in most respects. The work will contain a full and clear explanation of what is required and raise elements of discussion. The bibliography and referencing of source material should be clear. Unfussy style, punctuation and grammar.
An excellent piece of work where the emphasis is on a comprehensive explanation of the task. The style, presentation and grammar must be commensurate. Some scope for further improvement should be recognised. |
B |
60 – 69 |
Very good work, demonstrating good knowledge and understanding of the subject area with an ability to explain the topic. Assessed work has few factual inaccuracies. There is evidence of some reading outside the material presented and the directed texts. Work is well structured and presented with attention to grammar and to the use of language and style. Referencing, where appropriate is relevant and mostly accurate. |
C |
50 – 59 |
Good work, demonstrating sufficient knowledge and understanding of the subject area. Assessed work is clearly structured but lacks depth and some aspects may be omitted or some factual inaccuracies included. The use of language and style is adequate for the purpose but shows some room for improvement. Academic style is developing with a sound attempt at referencing where appropriate. |
D |
40 – 49 |
Adequate work, demonstrating limited knowledge and understanding of the subject area with a lack of explanation of the topic presented. Assessed work lacks structure with some omissions that are relevant to the question and incomplete coverage of material presented in lectures and tutorials. Structure, expression, style and grammar are poor with clear room for improvement. Academic style and referencing, where appropriate show errors and omissions. |
R |
30 – 39 |
Unsatisfactory work, demonstrating very limited knowledge or understanding of the subject area. Assessed work is poorly structured with many omissions and errors but some relevant facts but poorly related to the question. General presentation is sensible but understanding, expression, style and grammar are poor. |
