The purpose of this paper is to uncover and examine the ways in which women’s two spheres of
work have overlapped historically. Write a paper examining the ways in which women’s unpaid
domestic work and responsibilities have had an impact on their paid work experience in the
service sector. Choose an area of work (teaching, nursing, personal support worker, retail sales,
secretary or administrative assistant, or food service worker). Examine: the ways in which this
field of work has changed for women over the course of history, the assumptions made by
employers with regard to the capabilities of women in this field, the treatment of women in this
field, and issues of fairness. How is women’s paid work in this field affected by their unpaid
domestic roles and obligations? Finally, what steps may be taken to address the inequalities and
difficult conditions workers experience in this field?
For this assignment, you are to submit a paper of approximately 1500-1800 words (exclusive of
any endnotes and bibliography). Your assignment should be double-spaced using a 12-point font.
You must include references to at least 4 sociological works in your paper (scholarly books or
journal articles). At least two of your references should be from outside the course materials. All
references must include page numbers and date of publication. Introductory Sociology textbooks
and newspaper and magazine articles may be cited, but do not count toward the required
sociological references.
This assignment is worth 25% of your final grade. It is due on November 8th by 9p.m. Late
papers will be penalized by 1 grade per day
