After reading the two narratives on the slave experiences of Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown, you will write an essay comparing and contrasting the slave experiences of Douglass and Brown. What important similarities and differences do you see in the experiences of these two men? What important aspects of slave life do these two accounts focus upon? You should choose five topics in your paper. In your conclusion you address what aspects of the two stories you found to be the most surprising and what important lessons do these stories teach us today?

Possible topics to cover:

The type of work performed by slaves;
The physical conditions of slavery as experienced by slaves;
The regimen of discipline employed in order to the slave system operating;
How slavery degraded the humanity of African Americans;
How slavery degraded the humanity of whites;
How the slavery experience was defined by individual relationships;
The experience of the authors with whites in the free states;
The impact of slavery on the African American family;
The type of education and training the authors got as slaves;
How the authors came to dire and then get their freedom;
You may choose additional topics to cover, but it would be wise to check with the instructor first
to make sure that you have selected an appropriate point to cover.
Your paper should be at a minimum five, full pages in length. You do not need a header beyond your name and a title. You shall use Times New Roman size 12 font with one inch margins at the top, bottom, and margins. Use double spacing throughout your paper, however, do not use extra spacing between paragraphs. Also, you must turn in your handwritten notes on both readings with your paper. It is important that you turn in your complete, handwritten notes, if you do not you will fail this assignment. Inability to follow these instructions or turning the assignment in late will result in lowering the grade by two letters. Also, use the spell check feature of your software.
