Components of Capstone
1. Introduction

· The problem statement describes the identified problem/issue in more detail. Please see the Problem Statement Template for more discussion and examples of a problem statement.
· The problem statement should be 1-2 pages in length.
3. Integrated Literature
· The literature will involve a detailed summary and critique of at least 4 relevant sources related to the problem/issue.
· The literature review should be between 3-5 pages.
4. Critical Analysis Narrative
· In this section you will critically analyze the problem/issue using the sources collected in week 4(in a separate attachment). Please review the Critical Analysis Template for step-by-step instructions on completing this section.
· The critical analysis narrative should be 3-5 pages in length.
5. Problem Resolution
· Using the steps outlined in the Problem Solving Template, develop one solution to the problem/issue. Describe the solution in detail including the costs and benefits, and the challenges and barriers to implementing this solution.
· The problem resolution should be 2-3 pages in length.
6. Conclusions
· End the Capstone with a 1 page narrative of your final thoughts about the problem and generated solution.
· Also include your reaction to the project and what you have learned about yourself in completing the project.
7. Capstone
· A brief synopsis of your Capstone Project and a brief summary of your reflections on the Capstone Project experience.

Critical Analysis Template
Please review the following steps in critically analyzing your identified problem/issue
Step 1
Review the literature (10-12) sources collected in week 4.
Step 2
For each source summarize answers to the following questions: When and how did the problem/issue begin? Who does this problem affect? Who is hurt by this problem? Who benefits from this problem?
Using the example of the evacuation plan for New Orleans (from the Capstone powerpoint and sample problem statement templates) here is how I would answer the first question. Source Associated Press news story: It was clear that the evacuation plan was poor or mismanaged on August 28th, the day the evacuation of New Orleans was ordered one day before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. According to the article, the only notification was through the media. The mobilization of the national guard was delayed and when the storm hit there were several thousand people still in New Orleans and the surrounding areas.
Step 3
Take each question separately and summarize it for all the collected sources.
Using the same example:
Six of the 10 sources collected confirm that the evacuation was poorly developed and poorly implemented. While some sources focused on the slowness with which the evacuation of New Orleans was ordered by the city government, other sources focused on how little the federal government did to assist ahead of time in implementing the evacuation of the New Orleans residents prior to Hurricane Katrina reaching New Orleans.
Step 4
Compile the summaries of each question into a narrative (similar to the narrative created for the literature review). Be sure to cite your literature sources throughout the critical analysis. End the critical analysis narrative with a concluding paragraph about your reaction to the critical analysis. Where you surprised at your findings?
PROBLEM STATEMENT Description and EXAMPLES
For the purposes of the Capstone project, the problem statement will serve two purposes: Describe the problem to be addressed, and discuss the critical considerations relevant to the problem. Below are samples to help illustrate this. The problem statement should be 1-2 pages at most. The first paragraph or two will summarize what we know and the next one or two paragraphs will explain the gap in the literature your proposed project seeks to fill.
Poor Problem Statement:
There was a problem with the evacuation plan for Hurricane Katrina and many people were left without food and water for several days. This caused a big mess and major controversy for the government. Critical considerations included ethics as it was unethical what was done, diversity because mainly the poor blacks were affected, I cant find any global implications and the social change options would be to get a better plan to help those people.
There are many “problems” with this problem statement. The problem isn’t well defined nor are the facts to support the identified problem. Description of the critical considerations are too brief and poorly worded. The statement is poorly worded as well.
Better Problem Statement:
There have been many efforts to analyze the impact of Hurricane Katrina on residents in Louisiana. One such effort addresses the evacuation plan for the residents of New Orleans. The evacuation plan that was in place prior to Hurricane Katrina was either inadequate or poorly implemented. Proof of this is found in the fact that many residents were unable to leave New Orleans prior to the hurricane which lead to many deaths, injuries, and other forms of trauma. The focus of this capstone project will be in describing and analyzing the impact of the evacuation plan prior to Hurricane Katrina and providing one potential solution.
The critical considerations are relevant in addressing this problem. Ethical factors relate to whether the evacuation plan was poorly implemented based on financial considerations. Diversity factors will focus on the fact that a disproportionate majority of people who were not evacuated from New Orleans were ethnic minorities or working class or poor residents of the city. Globalism factors include how our reaction to this crisis impacted our standing in the global community particularly considering the swift action taken following the tsunami in the Asian Pacific. Social change factors include how a better organized and implemented evacuation plan may change the impact of the next potential disaster either in New Orleans or elsewhere in the country.
This is a shortened version. In the problem statement provide as much detail as necessary to explain the problem. Each critical consideration should be described in 2-3 sentences.
