METHODOLOGY Chapter • Questions you need to ask yourself at this stage? • What problem am I solving? • What solution am I looking to develop? • How will I implement my findings? The literature helps you to become DIRECTIVE
Inductive or deductive approach
Research design: Move from theory to testing: What is your conceptual framework? What model are you testing? What framework are you hoping to develop? So WHAT?
The Link between “Factors” – Conceptual Framework = last paragraph of your Literature chapter and Methodology Re-assessment of the Field/Scope of Research: No Much too much on theories of methodologies. Weak methodology leads to weak findings and recommendations
The Methodology chapter (1) . You cannot define your Methodology WITHOUT, at the end of your Literature Review chapter: – having clearly defined the Framework of your Research – describe/(re)design the Field/Scope that you will analyse . Based on those 2 above, you may perhaps decide also to amend you “Research Question” , changing: – some words – concentrating on some parts (scope too broad, too narrow; research question too complex….) If so, mention it clearly . State your selected methodology (tools) .explain why .+ connections with your framework . Avoid long explanations about methodology theories
Based on my Literature review chapter: How will I extract the needed facts/information/data from my field/scope of research ? Content : – Redefine clearly the ”field/scope of research” (and why this field) – Have clear definitions for each important word utilize when questioning – Express which methods will be utilized (and/or): – Surveys and, if so, which sample(s), how and why … – Interviews (whom, why, how, when…) – Focus group (when, for what, with whom …) – Benchmarks – Existing studies, data available … – If hypotheses, how will I get clear answers
For Interviews, what means: Sufficiency / Saturation Why may I anticipate potential additional interviews at the end of my research process? How to manage the Confidentiality / remaining Anonymous? How to manage a Focus group? What to do if I don’t know how to analyze my figures/data?

Findings 10 pages
Concentrate on the most important findings which will support your recommendations (the rest in the Appendices) • To be structured in a logical way • Do not hesitate to highlight common results or differences/contradictions and try, if possible, to explain why (if not = for the Limitations chapter) • Finalize with a synthesis of your major findings, as a transition to the next chapter . 10 to 15 pages (approx.) . Pleasant to read, with templates, intermediate summaries . Use appendices for detailed content as: questions, definitions of key words, sample characteristics, list of people, some results, interviews answers…
Recommendations and implementations 6 pages based on literature review and findings
The RECOMMENDATIONS ARE THE ANSWERS TO YOUR RESEARCH QUESTIon By sure each recommendation is answering your Research question . Select 2 Recommendations . Explain why those 2 . For each, a detailed Implementation Plan: What, Why, Whom, How, Cost, Timing, Efficiency Risk analysis, including mitigation – Recommendations & Implementations can be in 1, or in 2 chapters – Recommendations & the 2 Implementations: 5 pages minimum to 7 pages – Don’t wait for the last week (start in December) for preselecting your Recommendations and for starting detailing them – Expected Recommendations have to be in your Draft due on 8 Jan. – Implementations (at least as work in progress in 8 Jan. draft) – A workshop will be organized in January for helping you to enhance the Recommendations & the Implementations parts. But start beforeSelect the most important ones . At least one related to U.N. Global Compact Sustainable Development Goals or QNV 2030. And explain why. . Then revisit your Literature Review and Findings Chapters to point what is missing – as each concept utilized for the recommendations has to be explained in the Literature review chapter – as each Findings backing up a Recommendation has to be solid and valid (iterative process) – Find a logic way for presenting your recommendations: short/medium/long term; or efficiency; or cost/benefit; or people/organisation concerned; or … – Each Recommendation has to be detailed enough to understand its importance and the way by which it is answering the research question
Limitations 2 pages
Content : – Lack in the existing literature about my topic and my research question(s)? – Lack of information resulting from the chosen methodology? – Some key people not available for interview or survey? – Necessity to restrict to a part of the scope? – Lack partly of existing data, benchmark not exactly similar, etc.…? but not lack of time……. – Due to that, which Recommendation(s) is weak – Some aspects of Implementation plan will have to be secured? – And, based on where I stand at the end of my thesis, what next for future research studies?

Conclusion 1 page
– Reminding why it is an important topic – Re-mentioning the research question and the field of research – Major outputs – Finalize your Conclusion chapter with an opening for future Simple, positive, pleasant to read The last impression
Still time to check and re-check the perfect ALIGNMENT of my thesis: Research question ▶Recommendations, Recommendations to concepts in the Literature review and Findings
Executive summary 1 page don’t count it
– What is my Topic and my Research question – What are the most significant inputs from my Literature review – Which Methodology for my Field research/Data collection – Major Findings – Most important Recommendations (- Some of the Limitations)
