Pulse Projec

STAT-219 Pulse Project (100 points)

Part 0 Background

1. You will find your data set in Blackboard (Pulse Project.xlsx) in the Project Folder. This data set represents a random sample of Elementary Statistics students. The students entered their Height, Weight and their Body Mass Index was calculated by the app. The students then recorded their resting pulse (beats per minute) then did Jumping Jacks for 1 minute. They recorded their pulse after the exercise activity.

2. You will need to read this data set into Mnitab. The variables include Gender, Height, Weight, BMI (Body Mass Index), AEPL (After Exercise Pulse Level), BEPL (Before Exercise Pulse Level), and their pulse difference (AEPL minus BEPL),

Part I Data Cleaning (15 points)

3. It is always a good idea to review your data set for extreme values that might be suspicious. These extreme values can be due to typing errors during data entry or might be legitimate. If we identify an outlier, it might be possible to investigate it to see if that person really exists.

4. Create boxplots of all the quantitative variables (Height, Weight, BMI, Before Exercise Pulse (BEPL), After Exercise Pulse (BEPL), and Pulse Differences. If the boxplots are difficult to interpret, you can also examine the summary statistics for these variables. You do not need to include this information (boxplots and summary statistics) with your submission, but you should use them to identify any unusual data or outliers.

5. If there are any outliers, we won’t be able to identify and investigate the specific person in the data. That is what we would normally do. However, examine those outliers or unusual data and decide whether or not these subjects are legitimate or should be removed entirely from the data. If you decide to remove someone, justify your decision. Replace the entry in Minitab with a *. There should be some basis in fact for the removal other than your feelings or opinion.

You should note any outliers and the entries you have deleted under your first report section “Data Cleaning”. Make sure you discuss why any of these entries were removed.

6. Congratulations. Your data is now cleaned and ready for analysis.

Part II Research (24 points each question x 3 = 72 points)

Assume that the data set we are using represents a random sample of all Elementary Statistics students. Further assume that the populations of these variables are all normally distributed.

Below you will find three research questions. You can use any statistical method you want (some are much better than others) to answer these questions, but you must outline your methodology (hypothesis testing, some type of graph, confidence interval, regression analysis, etc.). After the “Data Cleaning” section, have a separate section for each research question. State your research question first, followed by your answer to the question. You can then quickly discuss your methodology and provide the Minitab output as backup for your analysis and conclusions.

Spelling and Grammar (13 points)

Spell Checker is a good tool, but you need to look thru your paper for spelling, typos, grammar errors etc. There is no minimum or maximum length for this paper, but you should provide clear explanations to all of your analysis.

Research Questions (Any testing or inference should be done at 95% Confidence).

1. It is claimed that due to smaller lung capacity, a female’s heart must beat faster during exercise. Given this information, do females have a higher mean after exercise pulse rate (AEPL) than men? Perform this test at a 95% level of confidence. Here are the Minitab summary stats for AEPL, separated by gender:

Statistics
Variable Gender N N* Mean SE Mean StDev Minimum Q1 Median Q3 Maximum
AEPL female 20 0 104.75 6.22 27.84 63.00 81.25 104.00 118.50 185.00
male 31 0 98.94 3.68 20.46 66.00 82.00 95.00 115.00 140.00

2. It is believed that overweight people (high BMI) will have a higher pulse difference because their heart must work comparatively harder when exercising. Given this information, can we accurately predict a person’s pulse difference (Y) using BMI (X)? In other words, is there some sort of relationship between BMI and a person’s pulse difference?

3. It is claimed that one minute of exercise will increase a typical student’s pulse (pulse difference) by more than 25 beats per minute. At a 95% level of confidence, evaluate this research objective (mean pulse difference is greater than 25 beats per minute).
Final Comments:

The most important aspect of this paper is that you use the correct statistical analysis techniques and communicate your results in a clear and concise fashion. Your report should be typed (Microsoft Word or other software; 12 point font is fine) and be easy to follow and contain no typos, spelling, or grammar errors. Points will be taken off for poorly written or poorly organized reports. You can use the rubric given as a guide.

Your summary should be easy to follow and to the point. You should organize your paper into 4 sections: Data Cleaning, Research Questions #1, #2, and #3. Be sure you restate the research question, state your answer to the research question, then briefly elaborate on your method (also cut and paste the Minitab output) used to answer the research question.
