Assessment 1: Essay

Format

Write an academic essay on the following:

Project success is a matter of opinion. Critically examine this statement, giving consideration to the perspectives of stakeholders and the influence of project constraints.

There are certain points that are common to all essays that I would expect to be present in yours. I will be looking for a clear introduction on what the essay is about. Then I will expect a development of the argument and some conclusions that follow logically from the argument. The main emphasis is on the content, which will attract 60% of the marks. Here I expect to see a clear discussion of the topic and a delineation of the scope of the essay, explaining why have chosen your criteria. Clear referencing of your sources is essential, and I would expect most of them to be from journal articles, as well as from secondary sources, such as textbooks. The remaining marks will be given for referencing, presentation and style. Your essay should be no longer than 2000 words (excluding references).

In addition to the writing links on Stream, these are two good guides to writing essays and reports as well as referencing:

· Emerson, L. (2009). Writing Guidelines for Business Students (4th ed.). Melbourne: Cengage.

· Manolo, E., Wong-Toi, Gl, Bartlett-Trafford, J. (2009). The business of writing. (3rd ed.). Albany:
Pearson Education NZ.
Things to keep in mind when research and writing your essay:

1. Come and see me to discuss any aspect of the research and writing process.

2. Start early and avoid leaving things until just before the deadline.

3. You must research the background to the issue as well as the context.

4. Essays that do not use references will not gain a passing mark.

5. Back up your claims by citing your sources using the APA style of referencing.

6. Seek help if you need it on academic writing and English language skills (use the links and the
resources on the Stream page).

7. Write in complete sentences and paragraphs and use formal language, not slang.

8. All essays will be checked by Turnitin for plagiarism. I will also be checking them for originality and
may require that you meet with me to discuss the content of your essay.

9. Keep a copy of all your assessments, in the unlikely event that they are lost.
