Project Priority Grid
• Part 1: Decide on 5-10 criteria for a numeric assessment scale rating the priority of IT project proposals for your organization. Determine appropriate values, weighting and scoring. This scale should be useful for rating & ranking a list of proposed IT projects by a health system’s governance committee for approval/funding. Criteria might include things like cost, benefits, patient safety impacts, etc. For, example – if you selected patient safety for one of your scales, you could use a scale of 1 to 5 where 1=decreases patient safety, 2=no impact on patient safety, 3=slightly positive impact, 4=positive impact, 5=significant impact. These are just examples – please determine your own scales and definitions.
• Part 2: Then apply these criteria against three hypothetical IT projects – one clinical, one financial, one operational.
o each of these 3 projects should be proposals for specific systems/solutions,
o for example, you might have proposals on (1) a new nursing documentation system, (2) a new payroll self-service system, (3) an asset tracking system … all these are simply examples, please select ones that are appropriate for the health system you have selected for this semester.
o each of the 3 projects should involve specific technologies with descriptions of the vendor you will buy the software, hardware or service from.
o each of the 3 projects should be sufficiently described so that you can apply your rating scales against them and so that the committee will understand what the 3 projects are about.
• By Friday Submit in the appropriate Discussion thread your rating scale, a brief description of your three hypothetical projects and ratings on the scales as well as an explanation of why your rating scale is appropriate for selecting/prioritizing IT projects for funding.
• Your end product will be a 3 to 5 page MS Word Document that describes:
1. your rating scales with detailed explanations of how they will be measured,
2. the three selected projects with descriptions,
3. the project ratings according to your scales,
4. a detailed explanation of why your rating scales and resulting scores are appropriate.
o Note: your rating scale should utilize a meaningful numeric scale in order for there to be differentiation between the possible projects. If every project’s rating is the same, the scale is useless.
