Term Project Assignment Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your depth of understanding of the topics
presented in this course. Though the case background that the company and product in the term
project are completely fictional this is not a creative writing assignment. Instead this is a structured
assignment which requires creativity in explaining the complex world of manufacturing production
planning and inventory control. The assignment will be graded based on how well you are able to
take a product concept and explain how the product needs determine the key operations
management requirements for an organization which is designed to create value for the end
customer.
Case Background:
You’re an entrepreneur and an inventor who has come up with a new product and business model.
Since you have received your degree from Golden Gate University you understand that businesses
succeed when they a solid business plan which includes the manufacturing planning and control
strategy which impacts the company’s budget and competitiveness. With this understanding and
the knowledge obtained from OP121 you decide to create a production planning and inventory
control plan for your company. You intend to present this plan to potential and/or existing business
partners and/or financial backers. The background on this case will remain the same for all four
Term Projects in this course. Term Project #2 will dive into the Manufacturing Planning and Control
Strategies focused on planning from Sales and Operations to Material Requirements Planning (all
materials in Sessions 3 and 4). This assignment builds on Term Project #1 and will continue into
Term Projects #3 and #4. Make sure to review instructor feedback on your Term Project
assignments to improve the overall project as the material is enhanced throughout the course.
Term Project #2 Content & Formatting Requirements:
The term project is designed to demonstrate your depth of understanding of the topics discussed
throughout the course. Term Project #2 builds on the content from Term Project #1. HINT: Use the
feedback provided from Term Project #1 to make any changes prior to starting on the Term
Project #2.

Product
Description
1. Come up with a product – (ie. A child’s toy, new appliance, widget, etc.)
Give it a name and describe what it is and what it does.
2. Briefly describe why this new product should be brought to the market.
(What makes it so good?)
3. Provide a photo/drawing.
4. Provide a sample Bill of Material (hierarchy, tabbed, or list format). Hint
– Keep it pretty simple, nor more than a handful of parts.

1. Establish a formal S&OP planning team with assigned roles and
responsibilities. (It is okay to make up employee names and job titles. It
is understand that they do not really exist. The purpose is to
understand how the process is going to be structured.)
2. Establish and S&OP Planning schedule for each of the 5 planning stages.
3. Using the six month forecast created during the Demand Management
phase of this project; create a sample production plan for your
product’s product family.

Master Production Scheduling
1. Identify who/what role in your organization will be responsible for
Master Production Scheduling.
2. Establish the parameters for the Master Production Schedule – time
periods and review cycle.
3. Create a sample Master Production schedule which is based on
forecasted orders only for the first month of your production plan.
Make sure to include – projected available balance, available to promise
(discrete or cumulative) and the master production schedule quantity.

Material Requirements Planning
1. Determine the production lot size for your product.
2. Using the Bill of Material in the “Production Description” section of this
assignment determine the product/procurement lot size for each
component and lead time for production replenishment.
3. Pick a component from the Bill of Material and create a Material
Requirements Planning (MRP) Grid.

References Use proper formatting for references – Refer to the APA style for formatting
in-text and direct quotations as well as bibliographical and footnote
references.

 Should only be included if supporting images or data take up more than
a quarter of the page within the text.

maps, graphs, flow charts, etc.

Other formatting and notes:
 Write in the third person – no personalization
 Use headings and subheadings to dictate the flow of your paper. This helps the reader
establish a logical process for understanding the material you are presenting
 Use standard page margins and readable fonts and sizes – Standard page margins should be no
more or less than 1” around the page. Readable fonts are a necessity, this is a professional
document. Reasonable standard fonts with a size not exceeding 12 point font for the main text
of the document.
 Page count maximum for this assignment is 7 pages. Remember that page counts for your
Term Paper will not include the Cover Page, References and Appendices.
