For this discussion, please respond to the following questions (in about 350-400 words)
1. What kind of research do you do? This could be school-related research OR informal research you might do in your personal life. Have you ever conducted primary, empirical research (interviews, surveys, observations, etc.)? Based on your experiences, what skills seem important for primary and secondary research? (I have never conducted any research)
2. When trying to find resources that you might use in your report, what will you be looking for?
o
What topics or keywords will you search for?
What kind of sources will be most useful (news articles, peer-reviewed research papers, documentaries, podcasts, public social media content, etc.)?
How will you make sure your sources are credible and accurate?
3. Monday’s Canvas page contained a few example reports. Pick one of these and explain what you think the report is doing well and not so well (keep in mind some of the things you’ve read about regarding reports).
Monday’s Canvas page
Both formal and brief reports are written with the goal of sharing information with others. Reports might provide a summary of work that’s already been completed (a progress report), present the findings of a study (research/scientific reports), or highlight potential avenues of action (recommendation/feasibility reports).
Your specific assignment asks you to create a recommendation report, which is written with the goal of suggesting the most viable course(s) of action. In this way, recommendation reports are similar to feasibility reports.
Reports typically follow a similar structure, referred to through the acronym IMRaD — Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Because not all reports are the same or are responding to similar situations, these sections may differ in name or may be combined or reorganized in different ways. Still, it’s important to be familiar with this general structure. You can see some example reports in Ch. 11 in TCT. I’ve also shared example reports below — you do NOT need to read through these, but you will be asked to pick one to examine for your discussion activity.
Here are a few questions to consider:
• How are reports a form of TPC(Technical and professional communication)?
• What do reports do?
• What are some common characteristics of reports?
• What might my recommendation report look like?
