1. Many recent scholars and activists have suggested there’s a “school-to-prison pipeline” in poor neighborhoods, meaning that the way school treats
students, especially misbehaving ones, appears similar to the way prisons treat inmates. Thus, schools are essentially training poor children to live in a police
state and to expect to be watched, harassed, and imprisoned. What do you think of this idea? Can you think of any examples of this, of things you’ve seen
happening at school that suggest this kind of “anti-socialization”? Be as detailed as possible.
2. Did your family teach you any “words of wisdom,” or life lessons in general? Describe a few of them. Then, for each lesson, explain whether you think it’s an
example of functionalism–advice to help you reach your greatest potential in society; or conflict theory–advice to hold you back, keep you from advancing in
life; or perhaps both, or neither. Explain why.
