Pigmentation and Bioluminesce in the Deep Sea
Instructions: An outline of the paper with the topic is attached. The outline also includes resources
which may be helpful. There is no minimum number of resources to be used and the reference page
does not count towards word/page limit. Do not need to follow the outline strictly or at all but if you
do deviate from it make sure ideas make sense and follow a logistical order where some kind of
relationship is being examined (i.e. bioluminescence and depth). The context of the paper should be
written from marine invertebrate biology, so examples used in the paper (i.e. cephalopods,
amphipods, etc.) should be marine invertebrates. Do not hesitate to message me if you have any
questions.
Length: 8 pages (~2500 words) of double spaced text (e.g., 12 pt Times or 11 pt Arial font), including
numbered figures, legends, and references (not including the title page).
Format: The paper should summarize present knowledge of the topic chosen (a literature review)
and discuss your original ideas and opinions concerning the significance and future avenues of
research relating to the topic. Sample outline below:
Main Topic: Use a cover page containing the title, your name, the date, your email

The total number of sections should be whatever makes sense to you. The subsections should
include at least one literature citation unless a subsection pertains exclusively to one of your original
ideas.

Introduction: Articulated main idea with appropriate development sentences. (6 – 3 – 0)
Overall organization: Topics arranged with a logical of flow of subheadings. (6 – 3 – 0)
Paragraph structure: One main idea supported by examples/evidence. (6 – 3 – 0)
Sentence structure: Grammar, punctuation etc. (12 – 6 – 3 – 0)
Figures: An appropriate number & size; relevant & with adequate descriptions. (12 – 6 – 3 – 0)
