SECTION 1:

Review and complete two Epiville modules: Cohort Study and Case Control Study (see attachment for both studies). Epiville is an interactive resource that has some knowledge check questions.

After completing the readings, consider the different types of study designs and address the following:

  1. Which study design do you think is the most reliable? Why?
  2. What about the most comprehensive? Why?

Choosing a study design is based on evaluating strengths and weaknesses and comparing it against the type of information you are hoping to gain.

  1. Analyze the study designs strengths and weaknesses and then choose one for your study question and testable hypothesis (see below).
  2. Select a study design for your question and testable hypothesis (see below). Which study design would you use and why?

SECTION 2:

Overview: Now that you have solidified your study question and hypothesis (below)

Study Question

What are some of the factors responsible for the high prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States?

Testable Hypothesis

Lack of or limited physical exercise, poor dietary habits or lifestyles, and low socioeconomic status among school-going children are some of the leading factors responsible for the obesity problem in American children.

Choose a study design for the health issue you chose and consider potential interventions.

Prompt: Address the following critical elements in your short paper:

Epidemiology Study Design Proposal: In this section, you will choose an analytic epidemiological study design from those in Section 1 and use to answer your research question and examine the hypothesis. Keep in mind this is not expected to be a complete research design, which would also include a sampling strategy, a measurement strategy, and statistical methods for the study.

  1. a) Select the most appropriate analytic epidemiological study design to research your study question, explaining why you feel it is most appropriate.
  1. b) How will you use your selected study design to identify patterns, causes, and effects of health condition for the affected population of your study? Are there any limitations of the study design?
  1. c) Select an appropriate measure of association (e.g., odds ratio, relative risk) based on your chosen analytic epidemiological study design. Why is this measure of association appropriate?

Tip: This can be found in the textbook (p. 296) and is closely related to the study design you have chosen (see attachment).

  1. d) Determine potential interventions for solving the public health issue for the specified population and/or community based on the epidemiological practices you have used. Be sure to cite scientific resources that support your response. You are not expected to determine the solution for the identified issue, but instead, consider strategies that may help solve the issue based on your knowledge from this course.

Tip: How would your epidemiological study inform potential interventions? Think about the different levels (i.e., primary, secondary, tertiary).

Guidelines for Submission: Your paper must be submitted as a 5 page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and at least four scientific sources cited in APA
