Introduction:
Journal clubs are a great way to keep one another up-to-date about developments in our profession. As a KU Shared Curriculum School of Nursing student your participation in this activity will allow you to find, read, analyze, and share current information about the topics we discuss in this class. In this fashion we can increase our own knowledge while helping our classmates increase their knowledge. I have found this activity to be very rewarding. I look forward to your contributions to this important activity.
Journal Club Expectations (How to be successful at this activity):
1. Find, read, and analyze two (2) articles of interest per section for a total of six (6) articles for the entire course. Articles posted are ones you believe will be of interest to this class by expanding our knowledge about the topics being covered (see course calendar for a listing of topics).
These articles must be from recognized news or reputable peer-reviewed sources. Original articles that are research publications are the most preferred. For example professional nursing journals posted on the CINAHL search engine are from peer-reviewed reputable sources. The Directory of Open Access Journals (www.doaj.org ) can be helpful as an additional source to locate journal articles.
Avoid posting articles from your local newspaper or others that review another article. Instead find the original article to post.
Feel free to post videos but these will not count as one of your six (6) overall article postings.
Your article postings must coordinate with the topics being discussed in the class. For instance, when we are discussing nursing ethics find something about nursing ethics in a peer-reviewed journal about an ethical issue.
You may not duplicate citations provided by another classmate or yourself. Only the person making the first posting will receive credit for that article.
You may use the discussion forum to claim an article that you plan to review and post. If your plans change and you do not review a claimed article please let you classmates know so they would have the opportunity to review it.
2. Post your review and attach the pdf version of the article in the Discussion Board under the “Journal Club” heading. This will allow your classmates to retrieve the article with ease. Do not post the EBSCO link. These are often very difficult to open.

Grading Rubric for Journal Club contributions:
1. The initial post must review the articles content by providing the following:
a. What caused you to select this article?
b. What contribution does this article make to our knowledge about course content?
c. What did you learn from reading the article?
d. What application do you see the content from this article to your work as an RN?
Your review of the article should be at least two paragraphs in length and contain between 200-300 words. Initial postings must include citations and references showing how the readings are effecting your learning.
This portion of your posting can be worth up to 50% of the total points available for this activity.
2. Sources of content (Citations and References in APA):
a. Citations: citations provide the reader information about the original source of information presented in the posting. Citations can be either direct quotes or indirect quotes (paraphrasing) and are included within the actual text of the posting. b. References; references provide the reader information about the original source of the information presented in the posting. These take many forms depending on the source. References are added at the end of the posting. For additional information see the content in this course, Dykes Library, or APA Manual. All initial and reply postings must contain both citations and references.
This portion of your posting can be worth up to 20% of the total points available for this activity.
3. Content is understandable using English grammar (Grammar):
All posting must be done using English. Grammar is important so the reader does not have to struggle with understanding your intent. Content where spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation are not used appropriately will not receive full credit.
Comments made in your post of a disparaging nature will not receive full credit

4. Content is posted on time (Timeliness):
All postings need to be available for the class to review by the date and time shown in the “Class Calendar”. Late posting are subject to point reduction. This is a faculty decision. If you know you will not be able to post in a timely fashion then you must engage the faculty in arriving at an alternative prior to the due date.
