Project Reports marking scheme
Practical reports will be required from each of the students. While students are working in pairs, which means they will have the same experimental data, results, and figures the practical report does need to be their work and written in their words. The reports should be brief, at most 4 pages long. The reports may be word processed and have digital images inserted or may be handwritten, but must be legible, and should be submitted by midnight on
Prac’s can be submitted electronically into the digital drop box on the DLS site for this course. Reports should incorporate a picture of your own results ie the gels, and you should discuss your results.
The format should be as follows
Introduction – (more important)
– Background: Explain molecular cloning techniques: enzymes, plasmids, transformation, selectable markers and GFP as a visual reporter.
– Give a real life example of where these techniques are used.
The aim of the experiment –
– In 1-2 sentences explain what the aim of your work was
Materials and methods –
– Do not list all steps. Refer to prac manual. REFERENCE CORRECTLY – be consistent with referencing style
– Mention any modifications to the prac manual
Results –
– Original plasmids –
o Explain 2 plasmids used in your experiments (pGFP and pBCSK) –
o List colony counts for E.coli containing original plasmids (4 plates) –
– Restriction digestion of pGFP and pBCSK –
o Show your gel’s image –
o Explain your bands and identify the locations of GFP fragment, vector backbones and uncut (original) plasmid DNA–
o Include sizes in marker–
– Recombinant E. coli images –
o Show E.coli colonies containing recombinant pBCSK-GFP plasmid –
o Show GFP fluorescence of the E.coli colonies –
Discussion – very important
– Discuss the results. What did you find?
– Were the results as expected? Why? Why not?
References –
– Minimum of 4 references (1 is the prac manual)
– 1 should be from the real life example that you mention in the introduction
– Use correct referencing style – be consistent with your style
