1. Pick a topic and discuss it with instructor.
My topic is transistors: A transistor is a small electronic device containing a semiconductor and having
at least three electrical contacts, used in a circuit mainly as a switch for electrical signals. It is the
fundamental component of most active electronic circuits, including digital electronics. The transistor
was invented to replace the bulky vacuum tubes on older computers and TVs. The two kinds are
bipolar and field effect transistors. Transistors are the main components in logic gates,
microprocessors and memory devices
My outcome is to determine if there are any other materials or substances that can be used and easily
produced as a substitute for modern transistors that which are mainly made of silocon.
Could your topic benefit the College? (For example: building materials such as asphalt or concrete for new structures,
material for whiteboards). Could your topic turn into a summer internship? (For example: material for solar cells,
material for wind turbine blades, etc.)

a. This should be a literature search, where you discuss what materials are typically used for your
application in the present, what materials were used in the past, and what are the “up and coming”
materials of the future.
b. Include references

a. What are the criteria for the properties? For example, for a tire: friction, durability, toxicity, Young’s
modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion, etc. What values are acceptable? Desirable? You should
use CES materials selector software to assist you.
b. Include several applicable graphs and charts to show how you selected your chosen material(s).
c. You may come up with more than one material.
 Sustainability of the material
a. Explain how your chosen material(s) is sustainable. If not, explain why sustainability was outweighed by
other criteria.
 Conclusion/Discussion
a. Discuss tradeoffs of the various possible materials.
b. Explain why your chosen material is best.
c. What next? How does your idea get carried forward? How could you implement it? Pass off the
knowledge to someone else? Would your research benefit the community? The college?

 References should go on the slide where they are used as “(Source: Your reference.html)”

Project guidelines
Length of Report
The length of the report should be 8 pages not including cover page and reference pages. Reports that contain
verbatim copied passages without proper citation will receive 0 credit. In addition, reports that contain lengthy
copied passages from sources, even if they are properly cited, will be severely marked down.
Format Requirements
Your report as to be to be written in Microsoft Word (See provided template) or some other software program
with the following specifications:
• use font style Times New Roman with a font size of 12
• use 1.5 line spacing
• use 1 inch margins on all sides
