Project Part 2B Instructions for Assignment
Instructions: Start by navigating to page 285 in the course text (2006, Exploring Language Structure: A Student’s Guide by Thomas E. Payne) I have included pdf version of the full chapter which precedes the assignment exercises. Locate “Exercise 9.13: Archi” and complete the following numbered list below in order to receive full credit for the assignment.
To confirm, you are not completing the questions in the text rather you are completing my numbered list directly below.
1. Analyze Archi (Exercise 9.13, page 285 in Payne). This is word for word translation.
2. Explain how Archi demonstrates all three features of a “passive” that Payne lists on page 250 (bulleted on that page). You will need to provide specific examples form Archi of each feature.
3. As part of your explanation/discussion, gloss and annotate Sentences #3 and #6.
4. When glossing, you may use I, II and III for the different classes of nouns that deal with gender and animacy. By doing so, you will focus on the linguistic behavior of the nouns, and be less likely to be confused by the gap between linguistic classes and real world knowledge.
5. What constituent (word) orders of Archi are evident in these data?

Instructor Hint* While the morphemes do have to do with animancy and gender, they also have to do with grammatical role as well. That is a big hint. You need to figure that component out first and then you can apply that knowledge to the passive translations in order to answer the passives question.
