Step 1. Create a unique client profile Create a profile for a fictitious client who will benefit from the BRI and has not already been diagnosed with HIV. Provide background details about this client to give the reader an overview of who you are working with. What is their background? What are the client’s substance(s) of choice? Are they a part of a special population? Please be creative, thoughtful, and expansive in your description. Hint: One would approach the BRI differently depending upon the client’s substance of choice and unique needs.
Step 2. What are HIV and AIDS? Initiate a conversation with your client about their understanding of what HIV and AIDS are. What do these acronyms stand for? How do these diseases affect the body? How are HIV and AIDS related? How are they different? Provide an introduction to HIV/AIDS education for your client. If you elect to embed brief videos into your presentation, please make sure you also address the questions above (in your own words) in the presentation and/or notes section.
Step 3. Modes of transmission & screening Present the different modes of transmission to your client. How is HIV spread? How is HIV not spread? Where can they get a screening in their specific location? What is the process for testing? Why is this important?
Step 4. Identify risky behaviors that may lead to HIV/AIDS. What risky behaviors does your client engage in that need to be addressed? Why are these behaviors risky? This will lead into the risk reduction plan in Step 5.
Step 5. Plan for reducing risk Together with your client, develop a plan for reducing risk based on the client’s self-reported risky behaviors. What is included in this plan? How can you help your client to help themselves? Please refer to the TIP Chapter 4 for inspiration. Note that this section is worth more points and as such should be more expansive and detailed.
Step 6. Tuberculosis transmission & treatment Provide information to your client about Tuberculosis – what it is, how it is transmitted, and how it is treated. How is TB related to HIV/AIDS? Why is this information important for your client to understand?
Step 7. Hepatitis transmission & treatment Provide your client with information about the various strains of Hepatitis (types, causes, transmission, vaccinations, etc.). Remember that there is more than one type of Hepatitis (5 caused by different viruses). Although the last two are rare, include information with regard to all 5 types for full points.
Step 8. Sexually transmitted infections/diseases Initiate a conversation with your client regarding Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and Diseases (STDs). Explain the difference between these two. Using your client’s risk factors for HIV/AIDS, discuss with your client their understanding of STIs/STDs and a plan for reducing risk. Provide detailed information about some of the more common STIs/STDs to keep your client well informed & educated.
Step 9. Wrapping it all up! Go back to your original Brief Risk Intervention plan created for with your client in Step 5 and review with them what interventions were discussed to reduce HIV/AIDS as well as for Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, and STI’s. What parting information will you share with your client?
Step 10. References Please include a reference section. Total: 100 Points Tips to Maximize Your Score: • Review the instructions carefully. Then review them again! • Make sure to thoroughly cover each Step. Most Steps will require multiple slides to adequately demonstrate mastery of the material presented in class throughout the quarter. Please make sure you have a minimum of 15 slides of content in your presentation. • Be creative – make your presentation both informative and visually engaging. • If using embedded video content to enhance your presentation, please make sure that you thoroughly cover the information asked in each step in your own words as well!
