Genetics

Homework 2
Textbook: Read Chapters 6-10 and this week’s lesson materials prior to completing this assignment

Question 1 (10 points)

If a mutation caused these things to occur, how would it affect the expression of the lac operon? (Consider each occurrence separately, not all together.)
1. adenylate cyclase stops working
2. CAP can no longer bind to DNA
3. CAP can no longer bind to cAMP
*If the question above presents questions in list (i.e. numbered) form, you MUST clearly label your answer in the given list form (i.e. use the same numbers provided) and address each question separately in order to receive credit.

Question 2 (10 points)

Discuss all the different ways and mechanisms that eukaryotes use to regulate gene expression.

Question 3 (10 points)

Discuss the similarities and differences when it comes to how prokaryotes and eukaryotes regulate their genes. Be sure to frame your answer around the content as it is presented in this course.

Question 4 (10 points)

The alpha- and beta-hemoglobin genes are expressed at different times during the human life cycle (i.e. embryo, fetus, adult).
1. How might this explain the role that each of these plays in human development?
2. How could this hypothesis be tested?
*If the question above presents questions in list (i.e. numbered) form, you MUST clearly label your answer in the given list form (i.e. use the same numbers provided) and address each question separately in order to receive credit.

Question 5 (10 points)

Why might the locations of introns and exons be the same in both alpha- and beta-hemoglobin genes?

Question 6 (10 points)

E. coli brings lactose into its cell by using an enzyme called Lac Permease. Once the lactose is inside, another enzyme called ß-galactosidase converts the lactose into galactose and glucose.
1. How is E. coli’s way of dealing with lactose similar to how your cells do it?
2. How is it different?
*If the question above presents questions in list (i.e. numbered) form, you MUST clearly label your answer in the given list form (i.e. use the same numbers provided) and address each question separately in order to receive credit.

Question 7 (10 points)

Why do lactose intolerant people have problems when they consume dairy products? Be sure to frame your answer within the context of the genetics and biochemistry involved.

NOTE: All answers must be detailed and fully address the questions asked, and must incorporate and reference, at minimum, the course materials. Brief and/or insufficient answers that do not reflect rigorous academic effort and college-level critical thought on the part of the student will receive little to no credit.
