Q) In exactly 2500 words. Consider a zinc rod, partially immersed in a 1Mol solution of zinc sulphate and a copper rod, partially immersed in a 1 Mol solution of copper sulphate. Now let the two solutions be connected through a porous membrane. • Using the Nernst equation, derive a value for the electrical potential developed between the zinc and copper rods. Look up the value of any constants you may need to evaluate your equations. • Describe what has happened to the two metals to generate this potential. • Describe what happens to this potential, and why, if a load is connected between the zinc and copper rods. • Describe how the current that could be drawn by the load would be influenced by the size of the copper and zinc rods and the concentration of the metal sulphate solutions. • If this arrangement were used as a battery discuss how, over time, the efficiency of the cell would be compromised and why. Give a heading for each of the above mentioned questions. Show out all your workings as marks will be awarded for method as well as the final answer.
