Outline of Proposal
Abstract
• Presents a brief summary of the proposal
Introduction
• The world is about to go for the third wave of the virus.
• Even healthcare workers are refusing to accept the vaccine.
• Cultural values and health literacy are two factors that the literature has identified in vaccine hesitancy.
Background and Overview
• The origins of COVID-19 in China.
• Transmission of the virus is likely to take place when the person is pre-symptomatic.
• You can prevent the virus by hand washing, wearing a mask, and socially isolating
• The only way to stop the pandemic is a vaccine rollout program
• The virus is taking a heavy toll on the health delivery system.
• Businesses are shutting down and people are losing their jobs and their health insurance
• Virus is more present in minority communities, particularly Blacks and Hispanics
Purpose of the study
• Vaccine hesitancy is a major problem
• Health literacy is likely to contribute to the pandemic
• Aim of the study is to identify factors that contribute to vaccine hesitancy among Morgan State Students
Significance and Rationale and importance of the study
• Vaccine hesitancy is a major problem for the healthcare delivery system and the economy
• Vaccine hesitancy needs to be addressed
Literature Review
• Mixed methods used
• Background for quantitative and qualitative research is described and why they are being used in the study
• Quantitative part uses quasi-experimental design
• Independent quantitative variables are age, ethnic affiliation, socioeconomic status, political ideology, and gender
• Dependent variables are scores on vaccine hesitancy and e-health literacy scales
• Qualitative questions are : (1) Do you think COVID-19 is an important issue, (2) Why or why not
• Are you planning to take?
• What influences you
• Ethics and confidentiality described
Participants
• There will be comments on the need for diversity in the sample of Black students
• Participants will be recruited through university email system
Data Collection Instruments
• Survey includes demographic data, vaccine hesitancy, health literacy, and qualitative questions
Data Analysis
• Quantitative data assessed by Chi squares and ANOVAs.
• Important factors will be identified with regression analyses
• Thematic analysis used with qualitative questions
• A mixed study is the term used when the design has more than one type of method. In your case, you have a qualitative part and a quantitative part. There are no requirements for using mixed methods. But you do have the usual requirements for the quantitative and qualitative parts. The rationale for using mixed methods is that you can triangulate the results. Triangulating means that the two methods give you different information and together they give you a more complete picture. This is presented in the proposal when I write about the two perspectives. It will probably be under the section where it discusses the rationale for the two methods/
Feasibility of the study
• Students are used to going to the internet to find answers
• Students are familiar with email
• Limitation is that there might be not enough students respond in ethnic categories
Dissemination Plan
• Participants and stakeholders will get a copy of the results
• Policy notes and publication in a journal
