N.B.: The following Guidelines for Presentation of Written Assignments must under ordinary circumstances be observed (they are based in general on MLA style).
• All written assignments should be identified clearly in the upper left-hand corner of the first page with your name and student number, the date, and the abbreviation for that particular assignment (see p. 2 of the Syllabus, Evaluation). No cover title page is necessary, but you should always give your assignment an appropriate title.
• Papers should be typed, double-spaced, using a standard font (normally Times New Roman) in 12 point size, with only left-hand justification, and with the margins set at default (2cm). Remember always to number the pages (put your last name and the page number in the upper right-hand corner of every page). Use headers for name and page numbers only, nothing else.
• One typed, double-spaced page equals approximately 250 words.
• First lines of paragraphs after the first paragraph should be indented one standard (default) tab space (= 8 character spaces). Note that in English typing, an additional line space is not inserted between paragraphs; everything is simply double-spaced throughout (to get rid of the extra line space, under Page Layout, Paragraph, set Spacing Before and After both on 0). No extra space is added after a period at the end of a sentence, except sometimes in business correspondence.
• It is recommended that the MLA rule of placing all commas and periods inside closing quotation marks, regardless of whether or not they belong to the quotation, be followed. Semicolons and colons are placed outside closing quotation marks.
• In-text citations in brackets are placed before final punctuation marks. Footnote numbers are placed after final punctuation marks.
• The spell check may be set on English UK, English US, or English Canada (English Canada indiscriminately allows either British or American spelling), depending upon your or your department’s preference. You may use the grammar check, but it should be used with cautionF-
