Read ‘Domesticating the world’ by Jeremy Prestholdt and answer the one or two of the following question in no more than 500 words ( perhaps a paragraph for each answer)

Here is the task:

read pp. 1-8 from Prestholdt’s introduction, Chapter 1, and the short six-page conclusion (pp. 171-176). This will give you a broad sense of the book’s arguments. To flesh out these arguments, pick any one of the following chapters: 2, 3 or 4. Each chapter is marked by a concluding summary that you should go over very carefully before you delve into the chapter itself. In sum, you should end up reading approx. 60 pages for Sunday.

As you read, consider the following questions:

1) What is “similitude” for Prestholdt and how does it matter for his argument about globalization and African consumerism? (Intro + Ch. 1 + Conclusion)

2) What did Mombasans gain from buying foreign consumer goods? (Ch. 2)

3) What were the global effects of East African consumerism? How did it affect industrialization processes in, say, Bombay? (Ch. 3)

4) What do we mean to say that Zanzibaris “domesticated the world” via their practices of consumption?
