Setting is often considered in terms of place—where does the story take place? What is the weather like, and why is that important? If there is a house or a
town, how does its descriiption affect reader interpretation? Setting is also, of course, time. When does the narrative take place and why is that significant in
terms of interpretation and analysis?
Perez’s choice to incorporate a first-person plural point of view and weave it through the novel Out of Darkness provides a new way of considering setting:
setting as a character, not static but reacting to events just as a character would. In her novel, setting has a voice—a collective voice. With this in mind, write
an analysis of the setting in Out of Darkness and the ways it plays the role of a character. You are not necessarily limited to the chapters on collective voice
for this assignment, though you should address them; other aspects of setting you believe are important for textual analysis are encouraged as well!
As always, remember to use specific references from the text (and cite them correctly using MLA format).
