LABORATORY REPORT 3

Full marks will only be given if your calculations, derivation of formula and results have been explained clearly. If additional space is needed, please attach separate sheet(s). Note that a high quality report which deserves a good mark is the one that has legible writing, well-sorted equations and well-presented diagrams. This report should be typed out and any scanned diagrams or waveforms obtained from the oscilloscope should be included within this document. The lab report must be submitted to VLE by 11:59 pm Monday of Week 12 (8th January 2018)

Stage 2:  Implementation of the System Control

1) In about 300 words, describe how the speed of the DC motor is regulated using the closed-loop control scheme (in Fig. 4 of the lab sheet). Your explanation should include the operation when there is a change in the reference speed whilst a constant load torque is required. In this stage, you are not required to explicitly explain the system dynamics.

2) Based on the input-output voltage relationship of an inverting amplifier, explain and show the derivation of Equation (2) found in the lab sheet on Page 7 (in no more than 150 words).

3) In about 150 words, explain why the step responses you obtained at the end of Stage 2 tasks are considered as satisfactory. You may want to describe the impact of step responses in a more practical DC motor drive.

Stage 3:  Investigation of Overall System Dynamics

1)  Based on the tasks on Page 8 of the lab sheet, present the waveforms for

a.     Vspeed

b.     VREF

c.     VAB

d.     IAB

Your waveforms must be neatly presented, their captions are included and their axes must be clearly labelled. State the values of KP and KI using the measured RF and RI according to the tasks on Page 8 of the lab sheet. In about 100 words, explain how the above a., b., c., and d., respond to one another when a step response is performed on the speed reference.

2) In this lab, the motor is continuously unloaded. Based on the control scheme you designed, describe the dynamics of the motor, chopper circuit and the control when a load is suddenly added whilst the speed is maintained constant (in about 300 words). Though you are not required to explain the speed-torque characteristics of the DC motor, you should still consider the dynamical equations of the motor and their interaction with the control circuit.
