You have been asked by your chief to participate in strategic planning for your emergency medical services
(EMS) organization. Describe an initiative for your EMS organization that could be classified as being a
functional-level initiative, and explain why your initiative would require a functional-level strategic plan
instead of an organizational strategic plan. This will require you to differentiate between the two types of
plans. In addition, you will explain why strategic planning is important for your initiative, and you will outline
the steps of your strategic plan. You will not actually create a strategic plan here. You will just describe the
steps you will take to begin development of the plan.
As part of your outline, you will develop a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis.
Using the template on page 211 of your textbook, Table 7-2, please develop at least five statements and, at
most, 10 in each area.
Upon completion of the SWOT analysis, prepare three to five goals using the SMART mnemonic in your
textbook.
Your report should be a minimum of two pages, not including the title and reference pages. Please
incorporate at least three references, one of which should be your textbook, in proper APA style.
