ED55020: Assignment 2

(30 M Level Credits)

PROPOSAL FOR A SMALL SCALE RESEARCH PROJECT.

Plan a small scale research project, reviewing the literature and the methodologies which will inform the project.

You are required to write a project proposal (500 words) and a literature and methodology review (2500 words). This will be accompanied by a supporting portfolio (to include BREO submission, timeline and any other relevant information, e.g. questionnaires).

In order to support your progress in meeting the Teachers’ Standards, you are required to select from one of the following key Standards themes for a small scale research proposal and project:

·       Standard 2 – Promoting good progress and outcomes by pupils

·       Standard 5 – Adapting teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils

·       Standard 6 – Making accurate and productive use of assessment

·       Standard 7 – Managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment

The same theme will apply to ED55021 Assignment 3.

Your response should demonstrate the following:

Proposal:

·       This section should include the title, identify the research question (and sub-questions as appropriate) and the rationale for interest in the issue. The themes which are to be investigated in the literature, the data collection tools you plan to use to gather the data, and how you intend to analyse the data should be stated.

Literature Review:

·       The key sources of literature and documentation used to support the development of the research should be critically discussed, under a series of key themes, identified to support the research question and sub-questions.

Methodology Review:

In this section you need to:

·       Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate different educational research methods and methodologies.

·       Outline the approach(es) you intend to adopt to answer your research questions, making reasons for your choices clear.

·       Identify potential ethical considerations and make these evident in your BREO submission in your accompanying portfolio.

Portfolio (not included in the word count):

You should include:

·       A timeline for the research with clear milestones and outcomes

·       BREO submission. You have a responsibility to conduct research ethically.  Brunel University has processes in place to support you. The Ethics application via BREO https://breo.brunel.ac.uk/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2fHome%2fIndex must be completed for every research project before potential applicants are approached to take part in your research project. This needs your supervisor’s signature and is then forwarded to the research ethics panel. A hardcopy should be submitted in your portfolio of evidence and include participant information, consent forms for participants and head teachers, as appropriate, research instruments such as interview schedules and questionnaires. For further guidance please refer to the BREO application guidance document available on the website: https://intra.brunel.ac.uk/chls/research/Pages/Guidance-and-Forms.aspx

·       Formative self-assessment

·       A full list of references, which should make use of the Harvard system as per course Assignment Guidance (included in the Module Study Guide).

The assignment should demonstrate accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar.

You need to work effectively within the set word limit for the assessment task (Proposal 500 words, Literature and methodology review, 2500 words).

All references must make use of the Harvard referencing system.

Please note that the essay should be submitted through Blackboard Learn in the ‘Assignments’ section. Please make sure the work is marked with your student number and specialist subject in the file name and on the document. The portfolio of supporting evidence may be submitted electronically (e.g. as appendices) or in hard copy to the T.P.O. (Gaskell Building) and is subject to the deadline above.
