Aims
The coursework aims to provide an opportunity for students to develop the following skills:
o Locating relevant texts and reading for general and detailed understanding to research a topic
o Identifying relevant content for an essay and planning effective structure
o Producing an extended piece of writing following appropriate conventions
o Expressing ideas clearly in writing
Essay instructions
Write an essay between 1,200 – 1,300 words based on ONE of the titles/questions below, using
examples, evidence and arguments to support your answer. You must use your own ideas and/or
clearly referenced sources. Refer to at least 6 sources in your answer.
1. While some argue that ‘public statues of controversial historical figures should be “retained and
explained” instead of being taken down’ (BBC 2020), others believe that the “retain and explain” policy
‘fails to acknowledge that heritage and monuments not only represent history but are also displays of
power’ as they demonstrate ‘what and who we value as a society’ (Massing, 2021). Do you think that
statues of controversial historical figures e.g. those who profited from the UK slave trade should be
removed? Use reasoned arguments and evidence to support your point of view.
2. ‘Data brokers sell rich profiles with more than enough information to link sensitive data to real people,
even if the brokers don’t include a legal name’ (Gebhart and Cyphers, 2021). Identify one or two
aspects linked to the issue of data brokers selling our online information, present one or two solutions
and then evaluate these. Focus on solutions which are being or have been implemented in a specific
country.
