Career Exploration
Throughout the course you have been introduced to several different situations, applications, and careers in which a background in philosophy would prove advantageous.
Think about a career or employment opportunity in which the skills, knowledge, theories, and teachings of philosophy might be a valuable asset. Some careers might make more explicit use of philosophy knowledge, such as a philosophy teacher, where other careers might make use of philosophy in more subtle ways, such as being a member of parliament in the legislative assembly.
Part A: Brainstorm
1. First brainstorm a list of different skills and characteristics that you think a good philosopher might us. Record your brainstormed list in a document.
2. In the same document, brainstorm a list of careers or employment opportunities that relate to the different skills and characteristics you recorded. Which sorts of employment opportunities or careers might someone with a philosophy background be well-suited to?
3. Then, select a career or employment opportunity that interests you.
Part B: Report
Conduct brief research on the career or employment opportunity you have chosen, and communicate your findings in a brief report. Your report should be no longer than 6 pages, double-spaced. Organize your report with appropriate headings and make use of APA formatting conventions.
Address the following in full paragraphs:
4. What sorts of responsibilities, tasks, and day-to-day work does the job entail? What would one be doing if he or she were engaged in the career or employment opportunity you have chosen? Try to be specific.
5. What qualifications, education, training, and/or experience would be advantageous in pursing the particular career or employment opportunity that you have chosen?
6. How does the particular career or employment opportunity relate to philosophy? Which skills or philosophical teachings might be useful when performing in the career or employment opportunity you have chosen?
7. Include in-text citations and a properly formatted APA style reference list for any information that you make use of from other sources.
Combine both Part A: Brainstorm, and Part B: Report into a single document to submit to dropbox.
Important
Use the conventions outlined in the American Psychological Association (APA) Style Guide to format your assignments. Properly citing your sources shows that you respect the ideas of others and helps protect you from plagiarizing. The formatting style should be used to create in-text citations, and reference lists.
