Note on DIVERSITY:
DIVERSITY is more than just an old old wooden ship as Ron Burgandy suspected…
Diversity is: any and all differences between humans including sex, gender, sexuality, age, physical and mental ability, socioeconomic status, language,
physical appearance, race, ethnicity, culture, knowledge, skills, etc.
There are SO MANY TOPICS AND THEMES you can focus on for this paper! Be creative, explore what really interests you in terms of diversity in outdoor rec!
Directions:
1. Read the article, the Deep Roots of Outdoor Recreation’s Diversity Gap here: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/08/outdoor-recreation-diversitygap-black-access-nature-national-parks/ .
2. Perform a general internet search AND a Cline library search for popular media resources on the topic of “diversity in outdoor recreation”. Find at least 5
resources that you can use as a basis for your paper 3. The article listed here can count for one of these resources.

3. Using the article listed in #1 as a model, write and create your own popular media article that highlights existing issues related to diversity in outdoor
recreation (ie. barriers to access, holistic cultural circumstances-historical and present, socioeconomic factors, demographics of nature-proximate areas for
recreation, family histories of outdoor recreation, etc.). Think holistically and critically about these issues, what is your main point you would like to get
across and why should anyone care? Come up with your own unique argument here and make it sexy for an audience, what is your hook? What is a hot angle
you can approach these issues from? Can you find any local relevance for the topic and incorporate it in your article?
4. Presentation for this paper should reflect popular journal presentation but with APA format for citations and references to meet the requirements for our
course: :
– include photographs throughout (titled and cited in APA format)
– titles and subtitles of the sections in varied font to draw attention to the section
– a short author bio underneath your title,
– a references list at the end of your article
5. Follow these formatting guidelines:
– 2 pages double spaced total: including all titles, author bio, text you’ve written, and photographs.
– APA format for in-text citations and references
– Don’t be afraid to make it fun and flashy!
– Popular media writing is similar to academic article writing in structure/content, in your writing, include paragraphs containing: introduction with your
central argument/question/focus, history/background on the problem/issue, the meat of the article- you proving your central argument/question/focus, and
a conclusions and implications paragraph to close it out. Do not label the paragraphs as “introduction”, “conclusion” etc. Follow the lead of the article above,
or others you find in popular media for subtitles in your article. Think of creative subtitles/subheadings for the different paragraphs of your article. How do
you catch the readers eye and get them interested in the topic?
Notes/tips:
– Writing for popular media differs from academic writing in that it allows for a more emotive style of writing. You have more freedom to be creative and
emotionally attached to your topic in popular media writing than in an academic article, however, don’t go overboard, your readers still need to know your
writing and references are credible! It is a balance between writing a piece that shares a real issue and has credibility while also providing a reading piece for
a wide audience to digest and be drawn into.
– While you are not writing an academic article here, make sure that your argument is sound and academic!
– You are not graded on your creative writing abilities here, just do the best you can and come to office hours and/or email with any questions or if you’d like
me to read through your work before submitting it.
– It might help to identify a magazine/newspaper/source that you would target to post your article to in order to best organize it.
– Avoid potential plagiarism: use in text citations anytime you employ a direct or indirect quote within your paper.
