Reading Beloved, most readers are struck by how different its structure is from a more traditional novel. It is not told from the beginning to the end by a single character; rather, it jumps from time to time, from place to place, and even from narrator to narrator. In a very real way it is presented in seemingly broken pieces. Yet, in the end, it is a cohesive whole.
