1. Concentration strategy. The filmmaker keeps most of the elements of narrative from the short story, concentrates those elements at the beginning, middle, or end of the film, and adds invented elements to the rest of the film.

2. I  Interweaving strategy. The filmmakers keep most of the elements of narrative from the short story, disperses those elements throughout the film, although not necessarily in their original order and interweaves either invented elements or invented expansions to already existing elements.

3.  Point-of-departure strategy. The filmmakers drop most of the elements of narrative from the short story, keep perhaps the plot premise, a character’s name, or just the title and, using these elements as a point of departure, adds an invented narrative.

(1) You chose a question for the “Text DB” assignment. Does your answer apply to the cinematic version? Describe a cinematic scene that does or does not uphold your response to the question. In the description of the scene mention an element of mise en scene that you believe particularly contributes to the effectiveness of the scene.

(2) Compare and contrast the two endings of the story and film. What is a possible difference in a reader’s reaction to the textual end as opposed to a viewer’s reaction to the cinematic end? Are both endings ambiguous (which would mean the director kept the integrity of the Oates unresolved ending)? Or is the text ending more satisfying to the reader than the cinematic ending might be to the viewer — or vice versa?

(3) Does the film back up your chosen theme, i.e., is the text you chose for your theme represented in the film adaptation?
