1. Problem Description
1.1. Background
1.1.1 Motivation & Description of the problem: this is the information the reader needs to put the
problem in context
1.1.2 Stakeholders, Beneficiaries and Their Specific Needs
 Be as specific as possible: e.g. age group, gender, ethnic group, geographical area, profession, etc
 Provide information market/beneficiary group size
 Always try to support your case with numbers, data, appropriate references
1.2. The Need and Problem Statement
1.2.1 Succinctly state the core problem that you are addressing
1.2.2 Describe key features of the desired solution/design
1.2.3 Provide detailed target specifications. Relate them to the needs.
1.2.4 Discuss constraints (e.g. ethical limitations, minimizing environmental impact, costs, etc)
1.2.5 Survey of literature, state of the art (market), and existing solutions, etc.
2. Design Description
Please include any sketches, drawings, diagrams, calculations, preliminary simulations, and decision
matrices in this section. The primary goal of this section is to present multiple alternative design concepts
and describe how you plan to select one among multiple alternatives. Some projects may be able to justify
the selected alternative within the proposal. Such projects should include as much of a detailed design
description as possible.
2.1. Concepts
 Describe the conceptual options developed to meet the specifications. Explanatory comparison
should be provided between different design alternatives
2.2. Concept evaluation
 More details on design embodiments.
 Provide at least a rough comparison of alternatives based on specifications, constraints, possibly
using one or more systematic selection matrices.
 Describe plans for carrying out any critical simulation and modeling efforts that will lead to eventual
selection of one design concept.
2.3. Detailed Design
 This section should be included in the proposal if the selection of a particular design concept
has/can already be justified at the proposal stage.
 A substantial section which may include subsections, this should address the detail design process
and results for your project. Include preliminary work. Describe main components, Preliminary
calculations, drawings, Modeling, feasibility studies (rapid prototyping)
3. Context and Impact
3.1. Economic analysis
 Describe the upstream and downstream economics of your project. Considerations should include
the market, prototype cost, full-scale production projections (if appropriate), etc. Explain how this
has shaped your design.
3.2. Environmental impact analysis
 From a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) perspective, describe the expected upstream and downstream
environmental impacts of your project, especially at full scale and with respect to alternatives.
Explain how this has shaped your design.

3.3. Social impact analysis
 Describe the upstream and downstream social impacts of your project, especially at full scale and
with respect to alternatives. Topics might include accessibility, impact to available jobs, quality of
life, etc. Explain how this has shaped your design.
3.4. Ethical analysis
 From the perspectives discussed in the Engineering Ethics lecture and course(s), describe the ethical
considerations of your project. Explain how this has shaped your design.
4. Approach (describe how you plan to execute your design, what do you plan to run simulations, FEA, FMEA,
Story boarding etc)
4.1. CAD/CAM
4.2. Animations
4.3. Simulations
4.4. Numerical modeling
5. Materials/Resources
5.1. Hardware (Arduino, microcontrollers,)
5.2. Software (CAD/CAM program, FEA software, Python, Comsol etc)
6. Project Management
6.1. Team organization
 Describe the roles of each team member, what organizational tools you have used, etc.
6.2. Schedule and milestones
 Describe the system level and work packages for the project.
6.3. Describe the schedule and milestones t
6.4. Project budget
 Describe your budget plan. Consider including a table or spreadsheet as an appendix.
6.5. Success BenchMarks –How will you determine if your project was a success
7. References
 Provide a complete list of literature used in completing the design project report. All must be cited in the
text. The use of reference management software is highly recommended (e.g. EndNote, RefWorks,
Zotero) No webpages. Here a link to the style guide. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/bk2006-STYG.ch014
