Upon successful completion of this seminar, students should be able to:
1. discuss the process of critical thinking;
2. explain factors affecting critical thinking;
3. describe critical thinking in decision making;
4. apply critical thinking skills in problem-solving of daily life issues.
Students are required to choose a daily life experience on decision making, analyse and
critique the reasoning, problem solving and decision making strategies being used.

Details of the individual paper
1. This assignment aims to assess students’ knowledge and skills in applying
reasoning, problem solving and decision making strategies and their abilities in
analysing and appraising issues in the context of their daily life.
2. Students are expected to discuss, apply and evaluate at least 4 reasoning, problem
solving and/or decision making strategies in the chosen case that have been or
could be applied.
3. Some examples of the reasoning strategies are listed in Appendix I for reference.
Other appropriate reasoning, problem solving and decision making strategies
would be accepted.
4. Students are suggested to include the following components:
i. Introduction
– The aim/ purpose of writing this paper
– The organisation/ structure of the paper
ii. Body content
– Describe the chosen case (daily life experience)
– Identify the key assumptions of the daily life experience
– Interpret the reasoning, problem solving and/or decision-making
strategies(s) brought out from the case
– Discuss benefits and constraints of the identified strategies
– Suggest other reasoning strategies, if appropriate
– Reflect on why this decision has been made, what you have learned
throughout the experience and how you have been influenced
iii. Conclusion
– Summarise the main points of the paper
iv. References
– Journals and books you have referred to must be acknowledged in the
text and also to be presented in the reference list. Avoid plagiarism.
– Referencing format: the American Psychological Association (APA)
style (6th edition)
v. Appendix
– Use of appendix with illustration
– It serves as a supplementary material at the end of the paper.

x This assignment constitutes 60% of the total score of the subject. For details, please
refer to the marking criteria for individual assignment.
