FINAL PROJECT OVERVIEW & PURPOSE
Identify a dataset that interests you. In the project you will visualize, analyze, and
interpret the data. You will also identify a related Psychological Question.
PROJECT PROPOSAL OBJECTIVES
1. Identify a Related Psychological Question
2. Summarize 4 Related Empirical Articles
3. Dataset Methods Outline
4. Describe Your Hypotheses
5. Describe Your Data Analysis Plan
IDENTIFY A RELATED PSYCHOLOGICAL QUESTION
1. Select a psychological research question to examine. It must be related to your
dataset in theme. The dataset won’t answer the psychological question. The point
of this psychological research question is to review the literature.
[ANSWER] The psychological question that I am going to explore is: What impact
does consuming caffeine have on mental health?
SUMMARIZE 4 RELATED EMPIRICAL ARTICLES
2. Find 4 empirical peer reviewed journal articles that are about your psychological
research question. Provide a brief summary of each article as well as the APA

This article is about Caffeine use may exacerbate emotional and behavioral symptoms
and may also interfere with the therapeutic effectiveness of some psychopharm
acological medications. Both direct and indirect mechanisms of caffeine’s effects on
psychological and physical health are summarized.

as a result of consuming green tea. The present study examined whether green tea
consumption in everyday life in Japan is associated with positive mental health.

This article is about Caffeine is the most widely consumed central nervous system
stimulant in the world, yet little is known about its effects on aggressive behavior.
Individuals often consume caffeine to increase energy and ward off mental depletion.
Because mental depletion increases aggression when people are provoked, caffeine
might reduce aggression by ameliorating the negative effects of depletion.

This article is about In Western populations, the caffeine intake of young adults has
received significant attention in the research literature; our knowledge in other societies
remains limited. The research of this article is quantifying the amount of ingested
caffeine and how this is related to measures of physical and mental health in a Bahraini
population.
DATASET METHODS OUTLINE
3. This section describes your selected dataset. You need to discuss how the data was
collected, sample size, from who, when, etc. You need demographic data, for
example if your participants are humans then how many humans? Is there an
age? Was this observational or experimental? Not all tidytuesday data has a lot of
this type of information so contact GSI/Professor if you have questions. You need
2
to describe the variables you will be using in your analyses.
This dataset was collected from the coffee quality institute’s review pages, making
this observational as nothing was manipulated. The sample size is 1339 world coffee
ratings, 315 coffee company owners makeup all the ratings, there are 35 different
countries of coffee origin for 1 coffee species which is Arabica, but I will be focusing
on Taiwan, Thailand, and China, these 3 origins’ coffee ratings and qualities of the
coffee between owners of yunnan coffee exchange, lin, che-hao krude, koju matsuzawa.
The two outcome variables of interest are flavors and aromas of the coffee,
descriptive statistics are below:

DESCRIBE YOUR HYPOTHESES
4. Identify 3 different hypotheses you will test with your selected dataset.
Remember, hypotheses need to be directional. This means that you cannot simply
say that you expect there to be a relationship between the variables. You must also
describe the nature of the relationship that you are predicting (i.e. a positive
relationship, negative, etc.).
