Assessment 1: Critical Ethical Review
Research ethics are central to an understanding of any research method, research project or empirical research paper that you engage with. An ability to critically engage with the ethical processes that are embedded within a piece of qualitative research is a fundamental part of any qualitative research training.
All students are required to submit a 1000-word (not including bibliography/references) critical ethical review of a research article.
The review is designed to provide students with the opportunity to critically engage with the evaluation of research ethics through the research design and presentation of findings in an empirical paper. This will involve assessing ethical considerations in the article, any ethical issues that may be present and how they may be responded to. Your review should focus on:
· The discussion of research ethics in the chosen article
· Give examples, from the chosen article, of how research ethics have been addressed
· What are the potential ethical issues that arise in the chosen article?
· What are the associated ethical risks with the research methods chosen?
· Using academic literature on research ethics to help you critically review your article
Your review should be fully referenced, using the Harvard Style, and should draw on relevant methodological literature.
Assessment will take into consideration, the following:
· How well you have demonstrated an awareness of research ethics in the article you have chosen to review
· Whether you have considered potential ethical issues and how they have been/could be addressed
· Providing examples and evidence from your chosen article
· How reflexive are your critical discussions of research ethics in your chosen article
· How well the assignment is presented and referenced.
