Topics for Research Paper
Choose one of these topics and write your research paper. Make sure you have your own argument that
responds to the source materials, not just summarizes. Agree or disagree with the materials, explain why you
think the problem exists, what can be done to resolve it, and point out flaws and strengths of each of the texts
you are referring to.
– Polygamy: your argument in relation to history, lifestyle, current controversies; suggest what could be done
to solve most pressing/disturbing issues
– Gangs in the US: what you think of its history, differences, controversies, characteristics, dangers, measures
taken; suggest course of action to reduce problems
– Terrorism: discuss what you make of its origins, history, past incidents around the world, solutions; you
may focus on ISIS more specifically, since it’s more current, or other forms of terrorism; suggest solutions
– Crisis in a part of the world: your understanding of the history of the conflict, interests involved, history of
the area (e.g.: Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Mexico, Colombia, Burma, Iran, Israel/Palestine, Bangladesh, India,
Pakistan, etc); you can compare it to things happening in the US. Also, you can suggest what the US policy
toward that part of the world should be.
– Genetic Engineering: discuss your thoughts on benefits, dangers, accomplishments, corporations involved;
suggest what you think the future should look like from this perspective.
– Human Trafficking: discuss what you think are the reasons why it is such a prevalent problem; discuss how
it happens outside US, inside US, history of it, actions taken, controversies involving prostitution and blame
placed on the victim; suggest possible ways to help victims, or to reduce the problem overall.
