We often watch popular films uncritically without consciously accounting for the way in which they set up sex-role binaries (that separate human
characteristics into male and female) and from these, insinuate proper heterosexist practices and desires for women and men. In this assignment, watch a
classic romantic comedy of your choice, for example, Pretty Woman, Maid to Order, Sleepless in Seattle, or How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. After providing an
introductory plot summary, analyse how the romantic narrative is set up and played out as the only narrative of value for women. Add to the analysis the
whole category known as “chick flicks” and examine the assumptions implicit in its use. Observe how these films set young women up for unrealistic
expectations in terms of love relationships and their own identity, drawing attention to intersectional factors in your discussion. Be sure to support your
conclusions with clear, concrete examples from the chosen movie. You may wish to consider how various female characters are compared to one another,
for example, and how their roles differ from those of the male characters. Use your course materials to define and discuss common concerns surrounding
gender raised in your paper. All ideas not your own, quotes and paraphrases must be cited. Include a bibliography with at least 3 academic sources. This
paper should be three double-spaced typed pages, excluding your bibliography.
